One of the biggest misconceptions I see among young people in Nigeria is this: “If I just learn a tech skill, my life will automatically change.”

 

I wish it were that simple. Learning a tech skill is important, but it is only the beginning of the journey & not the destination.

 

I’ve seen people spend six months learning software development, data analysis, graphics design, UI/UX, cybersecurity, or digital marketing. The day they finish training, they begin asking the wrong question:

 

Where is the job?

Perhaps the better question should be: “What value can I create with this skill?” Technology is not a lottery. It is a profession. Just as graduating from medical school doesn’t automatically make someone a renowned surgeon, completing a tech course doesn’t automatically make someone employable or successful.

 

The market rewards competence, consistency, and the ability to solve problems and not simply the possession of a certificate.

 

One mistake many people make is choosing a tech skill because it is trending rather than because it aligns with their interests or strengths.

 

Today, everyone wants to study Artificial Intelligence. Yesterday, it was Data Science. Before that, it was Software Development. Tomorrow, it will be something else. The reality is that every tech field has opportunities, but not every field is right for every individual.

 

Another misconception is believing that learning ends when the training ends. In technology, the opposite is true. The day you finish your course is the day your real learning begins.

 

Technology changes every day. New tools emerge. Artificial Intelligence is reshaping almost every profession. If you stop learning after your first course, you’ll quickly discover that the industry has moved on without you.

 

For young people in Nigeria, my advice is simple. Don’t chase hype. Chase competence. Don’t choose a skill because everyone else is learning it. Choose one because you’re willing to become excellent at it. Build projects. Volunteer. Contribute to open-source communities. Create solutions for problems in your community.

Intern where you can. Use AI to become more productive, but don’t allow it to replace your ability to think critically.

 

Most importantly, learn how to communicate, collaborate, and market yourself. Some of the most talented people remain invisible simply because nobody knows what they can do.

 

If I were advising a young person in Nigeria today, these are some of the paths I would recommend exploring based on global demand and future relevance:

v  GIS and Drone Technology (especially for agriculture and land management)

v  Agritech

v  HealthTech

v  ClimateTech

v  Blockchain and Digital Identity

v  AI Governance, Safety, and Policy

v  Technical Sales and Customer Success

v  No-Code and Low-Code Development

 

Notice that not all of these require you to become a programmer. The technology ecosystem is much bigger than coding alone. We need designers, analysts, product managers, AI trainers, policy experts, technical writers, entrepreneurs, and ecosystem builders just as much as we need software engineers.

 

The future belongs to those who can combine technical skills with creativity, communication, integrity, and continuous learning.

 

Perhaps the question every young person should ask isn’t: “Which tech skill pays the most?” Instead, ask yourself: “Which problem do I want to spend the next ten years becoming exceptionally good at solving?”

 

I believe the answer to that question will shape far more careers than chasing the latest trend ever will.
